South Africa goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has appealed for understanding as players face criticism extending beyond the pitch.
Williams highlighted the human side of footballers during recent comments tied to South Africaās 2-0 loss to Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match on June 11.
āAfricans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I canāt figure out why our own case is different,ā he reportedly said in initial remarks that circulated widely. āMany Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but itās truly sad. As Africans letās stand for each other, letās stand together.ā
The statement sparked online discussions, with some linking it to broader continental tensions, including past xenophobic incidents in South Africa.
In follow-up comments, Williams clarified his position and addressed a viral quote. He denied accusing fellow Africans of betrayal and stressed unity.
āThe players are also humans, sometimes it hurt us and gets to us, involving us in what doesnāt concern us. Players should be criticised based on what happens in the pitch and not what is going on back home,ā he stated.
Williams further urged: āIāve been a target over the last few days for things I haven't said. I didn't say anything about Africa and people supporting Mexico. I've always said, as Africa, we're one... Let's leave politics to the politicians, let's play football and criticize for what happens on the field.ā
The goalkeeperās words come as Bafana Bafana prepare for subsequent group matches, needing results to advance. His comments reflect ongoing debates about fan support, media scrutiny, and separating sport from socio-political matters.
Reactions on social media have been mixed, with some praising his call for focus on football while others debated underlying issues affecting African solidarity in tournaments. Williams continues to lead by example, emphasizing team spirit and performance on the field.
