Nigerian music star Davido Adeleke has responded to criticism from Reno Omokri regarding his public campaign for the release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oyo State. The singer used his performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 countdown concert in Los Angeles to highlight the plight of the victims.
On stage at Crypto.com Arena, Davido wore a customised black jacket emblazoned with names of 39 pupils and seven teachers kidnapped from Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. The back carried the bold message “Bring Them Home.”
He also spoke during the event, urging prayers for the victims' safe return and acknowledging the sad situation in Nigeria. Some victims were killed, including a teacher who was beheaded.
Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Mexico, faulted the approach. He argued that such global publicity gives oxygen to terrorists and could complicate rescue efforts.
“Publicity helps terrorists. It does not pressure them. They treasure it,” Omokri stated. He referenced past cases like Chibok girls, warning that international attention can hinder operations and boost recruitment.
Davido responded via his Instagram story with a screenshot of Omokri’s TV appearance. He captioned it “UMU BINGO @renoOmokri fowl,” signaling dismissal of the criticism.
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when assailants raided schools in the area. Operations continue in Old Oyo National Park with security forces involved. No ransom has been paid publicly.
