Africa’s poverty is not caused by colonialism — Billionaire Elon Musk

Billionaire Elon Musk has bluntly dismissed claims that colonialism remains the root cause of Africa’s poverty. On Saturday, the Tesla and SpaceX chief endorsed a pointed social media post challenging this long-held narrative.

User @magattew highlighted Ethiopia, largely uncolonized yet persistently poor, against Vietnam. Colonized by France and ravaged by decades of war, Vietnam has surged toward economic prosperity through reforms.

“If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true. Can we please retire this excuse?” the post read. Musk simply replied “Yes.”

The remark has ignited fresh controversy. Critics, including voices tying Musk’s views to his South African apartheid-era upbringing, accuse him of historical revisionism and ignoring extractive legacies.

Supporters praise the realism. They point to governance failures, corruption, and policy choices as bigger barriers today. Botswana’s success with strong institutions contrasts sharply with kleptocracies elsewhere.

Musk’s intervention fits his pattern of challenging patronizing Western aid narratives. He previously suggested African villages boast higher happiness than Beverly Hills, drawing both applause and backlash.

On X, reactions split sharply. Some hail it as overdue truth-telling on post-independence mismanagement. Others blast Musk for downplaying colonial borders, resource plunder, and institutional damage that still linger.

This isn’t Musk’s first Africa-related flare-up. His repeated criticisms of South Africa’s policies, including Starlink licensing disputes framed in racial terms, have fueled accusations of bias rooted in his birthplace.

As debates rage, Musk’s single-word endorsement underscores a harder truth: excuses from history won’t fix today’s self-inflicted wounds. Africa’s progress hinges on internal accountability, not perpetual blame.
