FCT Police Commissioner CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi has issued a stern warning to vehicle owners in Abuja. Vehicles with unauthorised tinted glasses, covered number plates, or without proper registration will be impounded immediately. Their owners will be charged to court.
The announcement came during a press briefing on Friday at the FCT Police Command headquarters. Sanusi stated the operation targets the rising use of such vehicles in serious crimes.
Intelligence reports show criminals exploit tinted cars and hidden plates for “one-chance” robberies, kidnappings, and other violent acts. The move follows directives from Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.
Already, more than 30 vehicles have been seized since the enforcement began. Authorities vow to sustain the drive across the territory.
Sanusi urged residents to comply and report suspicious vehicles. He emphasised the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing to safeguard lives and property in the nation’s capital.
This crackdown arrives amid persistent security challenges in Abuja. Many commuters have fallen victim to criminals operating in unmarked or disguised vehicles.
Public reactions on X (formerly Twitter) largely support the measure. Users shared the commissioner’s direct quote, calling for strict adherence to reduce daily risks on Abuja roads.
No major backlash has emerged yet, though some vehicle owners with legitimate medical or security needs for tints may seek exemptions. Police have shown zero tolerance so far.
The FCT Road Transport Regulations Act, 2023, provides the legal backing for prosecutions. Defaulters risk heavy fines, vehicle forfeiture, or jail terms.
Motorists are advised to remove illegal tints and ensure clear, genuine number plates. The police have promised continued patrols and checkpoints.
This proactive step signals a tougher stance on traffic and security violations. Abuja residents hope it will translate to safer streets.
