Veteran Yoruba actor, director and producer Sunny Alli has stated he does not believe in money rituals. He described many witchcraft-themed storylines in Nollywood as unrealistic and lacking credibility.
Alli made the remarks during a Wednesday episode of the YouTube programme Oyinmomo. He spoke in Yoruba about scriptwriting, superstition and his personal beliefs.
The actor, known for films such as Omo Ghetto and Lagos Girls, avoids certain themes in his scripts. He finds them unprovable and detached from real experiences.
“There are some lines that can never be in my scripts. Like witch meetings, I feel it is not realistic because we do not know if it is true,” Alli said.
“No one has experienced it. Do they rent a hall? Some even say they wear red clothes. Who went there?” he questioned.
He further asked, “Who is the witch that documented everything? How do witches even look?” Alli noted he prefers writing about verifiable events like hit-and-run incidents.
On money rituals, Alli was equally direct. “I have always said I don’t believe in money rituals,” he stated.
“People claim a demon brings the money. I ask them, does the demon own a printing machine? Will it steal money from the Central Bank of Nigeria or a Bureau de Change?” Alli added.
He explained that when challenged, proponents often shift to new explanations, such as unbid contracts. Alli maintains he loves realistic scripts.
The actor also reflected briefly on his past gambling habit, saying he has since stopped. He believes God does not support it.
As a founding member of the Odunfa Caucus, Alli remains influential in Yoruba cinema. His comments have drawn varied reactions online.
Some social media users echoed his call for believable stories that resonate more with audiences. No major controversies have emerged so far.
