The Federal Executive Council has approved major reforms to the National Youth Service Corps scheme. These changes include a redesigned uniform and other operational updates.
Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande announced the reforms on Monday, June 29, 2026. He described them as the first holistic review of NYSC since its establishment in 1973.
The proposals feature a shift to civilian leadership for the scheme. Military will continue providing security support. Orientation camp will extend to six weeks with emphasis on skills training.
Other elements include technology-driven call-up processes and risk-sensitive postings. A new graduation ceremony will replace the traditional Passing Out Parade. Camp standards will see national grading improvements.
The redesigned uniform aims to reflect professionalism and national pride. Reports suggest possible incorporation of Adire fabric, sparking varied public opinions.
Social media activist VeryDarkMan reacted strongly to the uniform change announcement. He questioned the minister's focus and overall impact on youth development.
In a widely circulated video, VeryDarkMan stated: "This is what happens when you put m0r0ns in the position of Minister of Youth Development. Since he became minister, there has been no tangible achievement in respect to youth development in Nigeria."
He further criticised the choice of uniform, asking why a Yoruba-linked attire like Adire should serve a national programme representing over 200 ethnic groups.
Olawande has defended the reforms as steps toward skills development, entrepreneurship, and better alignment with national economic goals. The process involved multi-stakeholder consultations starting in 2025.
Public reactions remain mixed. Some welcome potential improvements in training and safety for corps members. Others express concerns over extended camp duration and cultural implications of the new uniform.
The reforms require amendments to the NYSC Act for full implementation. Legal processes will now commence under the Attorney-General's office.
This development continues broader discussions on modernising Nigeria's youth service framework. Stakeholders await further details on how changes will address longstanding challenges in the scheme.
