Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Kola Oyewo has passed away at the age of 80. The news broke on Friday evening, sending shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Actor Kunle Afod confirmed the development on Instagram. He described Oyewo as a true legend who had taken his final bow.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba Ile, Osun State, Oyewo built a remarkable career spanning over six decades. He began acting professionally in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group.
Oyewo gained prominence for his role as Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not to Blame. He also delivered memorable performances in films such as Saworoide, Sango, and Koseegbe.
Beyond acting, he was a distinguished scholar. Oyewo earned a BA from Obafemi Awolowo University and later obtained MA and PhD degrees in Drama from the University of Ibadan. He lectured at several universities until his retirement.
Recent health challenges, including an enlarged prostate, had affected his public appearances. He had spoken openly about his recovery following medical procedures earlier this year.
Tributes poured in swiftly on social media. Many fans and colleagues highlighted his contributions to Yoruba theatre and education. One X user recalled his iconic roles as Lapite in Saworoide and Mako in Koseegbe.
President Tinubu had previously described him as a national treasure during his 80th birthday celebrations in March. The veteran’s legacy in Nigerian cinema remains widely acknowledged.
Details of funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family. The Nollywood community continues to mourn the loss of this iconic figure.
Oyewo’s passing marks the end of an era for Yoruba film and theatre. His timeless work will continue to inspire upcoming generations of actors and scholars.
