Veekee James, the renowned Nigerian fashion designer, has voiced her astonishment following a bold financial request from a social media user.
The incident unfolded on Snapchat when an individual sought ₦2,000,000 to cover school fees. James, known for her rise from Ajegunle in Lagos, shared her reaction in a video that quickly circulated online.
"There's something wrong somewhere," she began. "In what way have I portrayed myself to make somebody think they can randomly ask me to help with ₦2,000,000 for school fees? I'm a struggling fatherless child who now has a child."
James highlighted her usual encounters with smaller requests. She noted that pleas for ₦20,000, ₦50,000, or ₦100,000 are common, and she assists where possible.
"Normally, what I see is, 'Help me with ₦20k, ₦50k, ₦100k.' I still dey say, 'Okay, okay,' the one wey I fit help, I help," she explained. "₦2,000,000 for school fees? Which school you dey go?"
Born Ruth Erikan James on June 9, 1995, in Akwa Ibom State, she lost her father at age five. Raised by her tailor mother in Ajegunle, she built her brand through determination. Her success includes AMVCA Best Designer awards and recognition on Forbes Africa 30 Under 30.
The designer recently welcomed a baby girl with her husband in May 2026, adding to her responsibilities as a new mother.
Her story resonates with many Nigerians facing economic pressures. School fees have risen sharply, pushing some students and parents to seek help online. Yet, James' response underscores personal boundaries.
Social media users have shared mixed reactions. Some empathize with her position as a self-made entrepreneur supporting her family. Others view the request as unrealistic given widespread hardships.
James has previously spoken about valuing education. She once funded her brother's studies abroad despite not completing her own formal path in the same way, emphasizing its importance in her family.
The fashion icon continues to inspire through her work, dressing celebrities and running successful brands. This latest encounter highlights ongoing conversations about expectations of public figures in tough economic times.
As the video gains traction, it sparks broader reflections on financial requests in the digital age.
