Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, and his wife Afolashade Omiyinka received royal honours from the Ooni of Ife.
The monarch, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, conferred the title Baba Awada Konge Oduwa on the actor during a palace visit.
He also presented the couple with a brand new car and other luxurious gifts.
Baba Ijesha announced the development on social media on July 2.
In his statement, he expressed deep gratitude.
“My deepest gratitude to His Imperial Majesty, Ooni of Ife. Baba, thank you for the royal welcome, fatherly love, and the confidence you gave my wife Afolashade Omiyinka and I,” he wrote.
He continued, “For the luxurious gifts you blessed us with, and the brand new car — I am truly humbled.”
“As a son of the soil, I’m also honoured by the chieftaincy title Baba Awada Konge Oduwa, Ile Ife, Ile Oodua!”
The actor added thanks to chiefs and citizens of the kingdom.
The visit occurred around July 1. It followed the couple’s recent announcement of their newborn son, King Kagar Omiyinka.
Baba Ijesha’s conviction for sexual assault of a minor and subsequent prison release have remained points of public discussion.
The honour has triggered varied reactions on social media platforms including X.
Some users questioned the decision, citing concerns over accountability for child-related offenses.
Critics, including feminist voices, described it as insensitive to survivors.
Others viewed it as a gesture of forgiveness and rehabilitation after serving time.
Videos of the couple at the palace have circulated widely.
The development comes amid ongoing conversations about Baba Ijesha’s personal life and career comeback.
No official comment has been issued from the palace on the reactions.
Baba Ijesha has not made further public statements beyond his initial thanks.
The incident highlights tensions between traditional honours and contemporary social values in Nigeria.
