Nigerian Afro-house singer Niniola Apata broke down in tears during her late husband’s service of songs. She credited Michael Chiedu Ndika with transforming her from an unknown talent into a Grammy-nominated star.
Ndika, also known as Big Mike and CEO of NaijaReview, died on May 19, 2026, at age 44. Niniola announced the news the following day in raw Instagram Stories posts that stunned fans who were unaware of their 13-year marriage.
At the vigil on June 4, Niniola delivered an emotional tribute before family, including sister Teni, and industry figures. She described Ndika as far more than a spouse. He was her manager, strategist, and unwavering pillar.
“Michael did everything for me. He was breathing for me. He loved me so much. I learnt so much from him. He showed me the ropes,” she said, her voice cracking.
She continued, “I met him and fell in love with him. We did stuff before I even dropped the first single. My story with Michael is a long story.”
Niniola recalled their early days clearly. “When Michael met me raw, he said ‘I will make you a superstar’. And he did. I was just the face and the voice, but Michael was the engine.”
The singer admitted she once considered quitting music. “Even when I decided to give music a break, he did not let me.”
She painted a picture of total dependence. “The first person I saw in the morning was Michael. And the last person before I close my eyes was Michael. He was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Reactions on X poured in quickly after clips surfaced. Many expressed shock at the private union, while others praised Ndika’s behind-the-scenes role in hits like “Maradona.” Some users questioned the secrecy, noting Niniola had publicly denied marriage rumors as recently as 2025.
No cause of death has been disclosed, fueling quiet online speculation without concrete evidence. The burial took place the next day.
Niniola’s vulnerability laid bare a partnership that blended romance, business, and daily intimacy. In an industry where public images often mask private realities, her words highlighted Ndika’s decisive influence on her success.
Fans and colleagues continue to share condolences. Yet the sudden loss leaves questions about Niniola’s future trajectory without her longtime “engine.” The tribute, while heartfelt, also underscores how much she relied on him professionally and personally.
