Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stood by her comments on supporting small-scale businesses. She clarified that her initiative extends beyond akara sellers to include tomato, pepper, vegetable, and boli traders.

The First Lady made the remarks on Monday during the inauguration of the Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir of Hadejia’s Palace in Jigawa State. She announced a ₦100 million grant for 2,000 women petty traders. Each beneficiary receives ₦50,000 to expand their businesses.

Oluremi Tinubu dismissed circulating criticisms and misinformation. She stressed that no amount of backlash would deter her commitment to grassroots women entrepreneurs.

“We’ve donated 100 million to help petty traders,” she said. “I know people have been talking that I said Akara, but it’s not only Akara. We also have Booli sellers, tomato sellers, vegetable sellers and pepper sellers too. We’ll continue to empower them.”

Her initial comments in Abuja on June 25 highlighted low-capital ventures. She noted that starting an akara business or roasting corn requires little money. Grants, not loans, were provided to support such enterprises under the Renewed Hope Initiative.

The response in Jigawa came after widespread online debate. Critics viewed the advice as out of touch with economic hardships. Supporters pointed to the dignity of informal trade and its role in family livelihoods.

Oluremi Tinubu emphasized broader impacts. Her office has supported health initiatives, including funds for tuberculosis, breast cancer, and malnutrition. The petty traders’ programme aims to foster financial independence among women.

She urged youths to explore Nigeria’s resources beyond oil. “Nigeria is a really blessed country,” she added. Public reaction on X mixed defense of empowerment with ongoing skepticism.

The First Lady maintained focus on self-reliance. The programme targets thousands of women across states. It seeks to strengthen small businesses amid national challenges.

Officials have defended the approach. They highlight the informal sector’s resilience and historical role in uplifting households.

Oluremi Tinubu’s visit to Jigawa also included other projects. Her message reinforced commitment to women at the grassroots level.
