Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, died while in bandits' custody. His family has challenged the official explanation for his passing.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the death on June 13. Officials stated the retired officer succumbed to complications of diabetes and hypertension despite rescue efforts.
His son, Isyaka Rabe Abubakar, strongly disputed this account in a Hausa interview with DW. He asserted his father had no history of diabetes or high blood pressure.
According to Isyaka, the general likely died from a snake bite sustained in the bandits' camp. He described reports of pre-existing conditions as inaccurate.
The abduction occurred on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area. Bandits seized the general and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, while they headed to a wedding. Their driver escaped.
Isyaka also corrected claims about his mother's release. He confirmed she remains in captivity as of his latest statements.
The general was buried the same evening at Gidan Dawa Cemetery in Katsina. Family, military officers, and officials attended amid widespread grief.
The incident has sparked public concern over security in northwest Nigeria. Leaders including President Bola Tinubu and Senator David Mark expressed condolences, describing it as a national tragedy.
Family members portrayed the late general as a deeply religious and peace-loving man. They called for clarity on the true circumstances of his death.
