Omoyele Sowore resisted prison officials on Monday during his transfer to Kuje Correctional Centre. The activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate was remanded following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja.
Justice Mohammed Umar ordered the remand after revoking Sowore's bail. The decision stemmed from cybercrime charges linked to social media posts about President Bola Tinubu. Sowore's application for the judge to recuse himself was dismissed.
DSS operatives had earlier taken him from the courtroom. Prison officials arrived with the Black Maria vehicle for the transfer around 2 p.m. Sowore refused to enter the van.
In video footage, he kicked while protesting. "I will not go with you," Sowore declared. He questioned why he should be transported like a common criminal.
Sowore suggested alternatives such as a Hilux or regular vehicle. He urged officials to "let the prisoners breathe" and noted better treatment for politicians facing similar accusations. Supporters protested at the scene amid the chaos.
The activist remained defiant. He told followers he came prepared with a prison bag and viewed the experience positively compared to past situations. Court proceedings continue on Wednesday.
Reactions on X highlighted divisions. Some users condemned the move as political persecution. Others defended it as enforcement of court orders. Public discourse continues on governance and justice.
Sowore has now been remanded at Kuje. The case reflects ongoing tensions between the activist and authorities.
