The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) is grappling with a major controversy involving its suspended Students’ Union Government President, James Iyanuoluwa Adio. Allegations of extortion against freshmen have been compounded by the viral circulation of a private intimate video featuring Adio and a woman identified online as TikToker Sexy_vanilla.

Adio, alongside two university officials, was suspended around mid-June over claims of an unauthorised ₦1,000 levy on 100-level students. Reports indicate substantial funds were traced to accounts linked to the student leader.

The university cited the need for transparency and accountability in its decision. Management emphasised protecting students from exploitation during ongoing investigations.

Shortly after the suspension, the explicit video surfaced on social media platforms. It spread rapidly, sparking widespread reactions. Many viewed the leak as potential blackmail or a setup following a fallout.

FUOYE responded by suspending two students, Alao Iyanuoluwa Odunayo and Olawale Abiodun Samuel. The institution accused them of cyberbullying and posting Adio’s private material after he allegedly failed to meet their financial demands.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tajudeen Opoola, through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), signed the statement announcing the immediate suspensions. The university stressed its commitment to safeguarding its reputation.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone has actively engaged university authorities. NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez expressed strong opposition to what the group called the “unjust suspension” of Adio.

In a statement, Babatunde detailed discussions with the Vice-Chancellor. “I expressed our fierce resentment towards the suspension of FUOYE SUG President, Comrade Adio James,” he noted. NANS demanded reversal or pause of actions pending transparent probe.

The association threatened potential university shutdown if demands were unmet. It called for adherence to internal student parliamentary procedures in financial misconduct cases.

Public discourse on X remains divided. Some users describe the video leak as a privacy violation amid the extortion probe. Others urge thorough investigation of all parties without rushing to judgment.

Adio has reportedly indicated plans to pursue legal action against those responsible for the video’s release. Meanwhile, a new SUG executive has been elected as the university prepares for Senate review of the cases.

As of June 21, 2026, investigations into both the extortion allegations and the video leak continue. University management and NANS are engaged in dialogue for amicable resolution. The situation highlights ongoing debates around student leadership accountability and privacy rights on campuses.
