In a bold statement that has sparked fresh debate, activist Rex Elanu has claimed President Bola Tinubu views Omoyele Sowore as his most formidable political rival.
“Tinubu has realized that Sowore is the biggest threat he has politically, that’s why he’s using the courtroom to politically persecute him but we will deal with him,” Elanu declared.
The remark comes as Sowore, founder of Sahara Reporters and African Action Congress presidential hopeful, faces multiple court battles. These include charges of criminal defamation and cyberbullying for publicly calling Tinubu a “criminal.”
Federal High Court proceedings in Abuja have ordered Sowore to open his defence in the defamation case. Critics argue the cases aim to sideline him ahead of future elections.
Sowore has consistently positioned himself as a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration. He has highlighted issues like insecurity, economic hardship, and alleged governance failures during protests and public statements.
Elanu, a known Sowore ally and RevolutionNow figure, spoke amid supporter gatherings. His words echo broader accusations of selective prosecution against opposition voices.
Observers note Sowore’s history of activism, including past arrests and protests demanding better governance. His supporters frame the legal challenges as attempts to silence dissent rather than pursue justice.
The presidency and security agencies have not directly responded to Elanu’s specific claims. However, authorities maintain that Sowore’s statements violate laws on cyber offences and public order.
As the cases progress, with hearings adjourned to later dates, tensions remain high. Many see this as a test of judicial independence and political tolerance in Nigeria’s democracy.
Elanu’s fiery intervention underscores deepening divisions. It signals that Sowore’s base remains undeterred despite legal pressures.
