Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, also known as Alex Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke, passed away on May 11, 2026, at age 40 from complications of advanced metastatic kidney cancer at Evercare Hospital in Lagos.
His death initially drew tributes from colleagues and fans. Recent statements from some family members have sparked public discussion about the circumstances.
In posts shared on social media, relatives including David Ekubo, Clinton Ekubo, and Ify Ekubo expressed concerns. They claimed they were not promptly informed of his illness or passing.
One statement noted: “We also heard that Alex Ekubo was brought to the hospital... My Uncle (My father) knew nothing about all this. His death announcement was a shock to me.” The family alleged the stepmother handled announcements and arrangements.
They further stated that Alex rejected his biological mother while alive and had limited contact with parts of the family. Burial arrangements were reportedly planned by friends and the stepmother without broader family input.
Clinton Ekubo highlighted: “His step mother arranged her best friend daughter for Alex for a wife without Ekubo Okwaraeke family’s knowledge... We were shocked when we heard that Alex was married.”
The family questioned cultural elements, such as wearing white for a 40-year-old and eligibility for titles in Arochukwu Kingdom, Abia State. They demanded explanations regarding properties and events surrounding their son.
Another post raised: “How come the blood clot on his eyes. Is blood clot on his eyes part of the cancer also?” They noted only one family member reportedly viewed the body.
Official family statements confirmed his marriage and described him as a beloved husband, son, brother, and friend. His biological mother and sister remain alive.
Reactions on X (formerly Twitter) vary. Some users support the family's call for transparency, while others question the timing after burial and suggest property disputes may play a role. Others defend the stepmother's handling of private matters per Alex's wishes.
The actor, known for roles in films like *The Bling Lagosians*, rose to prominence after placing as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest. He kept much of his personal life private.
As of now, no independent verification of all allegations has emerged. The family has called for clarity without assigning final blame.
Public interest remains high as more details may surface.
The Ekubo Okwaraeke family continues to mourn while seeking answers. Alexx Ekubo rests in peace.
