Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has responded to criticism over his use of a luxury Rolls-Royce. The former Rivers State governor said the vehicle was not a gift or the product of corrupt enrichment but something he personally purchased. According to Wike, he comes from a comfortable family background, with his late father serving as the manager of several companies. He added that even during his student days, he drove a Mercedes-Benz, insisting that while his family was not as wealthy as the likes of Dangote, they were never poor.
The controversy began after former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, mocked Wike for being spotted in the high-end car. In his defense, Wike maintained he has never been corrupt and that his lifestyle predates his time in public office.
Meanwhile, Isaac Fayose, younger brother of former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose, has stirred social media with a bold declaration of wealth. In a recent statement, he described himself as a self-made billionaire, stressing that he never took contracts or financial favors from his politically influential brother. Fayose challenged his critics to prove otherwise, noting that without his own hard work and hustle, he might have ended up as someone’s driver. He said his achievements are the result of years of independent business ventures and not political connections.
Both men’s comments have sparked public debate on wealth, privilege, and the perception of political elites in Nigeria. While Wike argues his affluence is rooted in family prosperity, Fayose insists his fortune was earned through personal effort.
