Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take firm legal action against politicians and political parties who have begun premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Falana, who has consistently spoken on electoral reforms, emphasized that Nigeria’s Electoral Act prohibits campaigns outside the officially approved timetable. He noted that political actors already flouting this rule should face prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.

According to him, when politicians are allowed to openly disobey the law, it undermines INEC’s authority and threatens the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process. He warned that selective enforcement emboldens certain individuals while weakening the rule of law.

The senior advocate further argued that early campaigning not only breaches legal provisions but also distracts serving public officials from governance, creates political tension, and gives undue advantage to wealthier candidates who can fund prolonged publicity.

Falana urged INEC to demonstrate neutrality and commitment to fairness by prosecuting all offenders, regardless of party affiliation or political influence. He stressed that Nigeria cannot build credible elections if rules are ignored at the preparatory stage.

His comments follow rising concerns among Nigerians that some aspirants and political parties have already mounted billboards, held rallies, and intensified social media promotions even though INEC is yet to release its timetable for the 2027 elections.

Falana concluded that adherence to electoral laws is fundamental to ensuring a level playing field, building citizens’ trust, and delivering elections that truly reflect the will of the people.
