Nigerian content creator MC Mbakara has issued a public apology to veteran Nollywood actor Jim Iyke following a viral video of their brief elevator encounter.
The incident occurred on June 14 when Mbakara and his wife met the actor near an elevator in a hotel. Iyke offered a handshake and a quick greeting before entering the lift.
In the video posted shortly after, Mbakara expressed disappointment. “What will it take for him to smile? It’s annoying. Celebrities always act like they’re gods,” he said.
The clip quickly spread across social media platforms. Many users defended Iyke, noting he appeared rushed and had still acknowledged the couple politely.
Backlash mounted against Mbakara for what critics described as an entitled reaction. Online discussions highlighted the lack of prior relationship between the two and the everyday pressures on public figures.
On June 16, Mbakara addressed the matter in a video on his Facebook page. He described it as a heartfelt apology to his mentor and leader in the industry.
“I am sorry. I don’t even want to explain anything. I was just overwhelmed. I was excited that I saw our star,” he stated. Mbakara acknowledged how Jim Iyke had enriched the childhood of many in his generation.
He continued: “The video was no intent to disrespect you. Please find it in your heart to forgive me. I’m very sorry.” Mbakara urged fans to share the apology and expressed hope for a future meeting.
In a written post, he added: “I never thought this will trend but I am dropping my sincere apologies to Uncle Jim Iyke and everyone about this issue. I was wrong.”
Reactions on X (formerly Twitter) reflected divided opinions. Some users praised the swift retraction, while others joked about the episode or questioned expectations of celebrities. No public response has emerged from Jim Iyke or his representatives.
The episode underscores the challenges of unscripted celebrity encounters in the social media age. Both parties appear to have moved on, with Mbakara reiterating respect for the senior actor.
