Daddy Freeze Sparks Online Storm Over Peter Obi Comment

Media personality and controversial broadcaster, Daddy Freeze, has once again found himself at the center of heated online discourse this time, for comments directed at Labour Party’s Peter Obi that sent the Obidient movement into full-blown defense mode.

In a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, Freeze voiced what he called his “personal concern” about Obi’s alleged past ties to the Abacha regime. Speaking candidly, he said:

“I love Peter Obi… but I cannot divorce him from the fact that he worked hand in hand with Abacha as the MD of the Nigerian Ports Authority.”

That one sentence lit the fuse.

Within hours, X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram were flooded with clapbacks from Obidient loyalists, who accused Freeze of spreading misinformation and trying to smear the only candidate they believe stood for true reform during the 2023 elections.

Obidients React: “False and Misleading”

Fact-checking came swift from Obi’s defenders. Many pointed out that Peter Obi was never the MD of the Nigerian Ports Authority during the Abacha era or at all. Some described Freeze’s claim as “a dangerous mix of half-truths and innuendo.”

“He didn’t even verify basic facts before talking,” one user wrote. “You say you love Obi, yet you’re pushing propaganda straight out of a WhatsApp group?”

Others acknowledged Freeze’s right to question any political figure but criticized his lack of nuance. One comment read:

“You can be critical, yes. But don’t distort history to make a hot take.”

Freeze Stands His Ground

Known for his unapologetic takes especially on religion and politics - Daddy Freeze isn’t new to controversy. He’s previously admitted to losing over ₦100 million in business deals due to his outspoken views, especially those critical of Nigerian pastors and institutions.

This time, Freeze insists he was simply pointing out what he sees as inconsistencies in Obi’s saintly public image. “We can’t keep pretending like our ‘favorites’ are flawless,” he said.

He also addressed the backlash on his own social media pages, posting:

“Being objective in a partisan environment will always make you a target.”

A Deeper Divide in Public Discourse

This incident highlights a broader tension in Nigerian political commentary: the fine line between critique and cancellation. The Obidient movement, born from frustration with the status quo, is famously passionate and protective of Peter Obi. But that passion can quickly become aggression when any opposing voice enters the chat.

Still, Freeze’s critics and defenders agree on one thing: the country needs conversations, not cults of personality. But for that to happen, facts must stay front and center.

What This Means Going Forward

As Nigeria inches toward another election cycle, voices like Daddy Freeze’s are unlikely to go silent. If anything, the volume is turning up. Whether you love him or loathe him, Freeze knows exactly how to stir the pot and the Obidients just gave him another helping of viral fuel.

One thing’s clear: in today’s digital Nigeria, even a whisper about Peter Obi can ignite a firestorm.
