Femi Otedola Reveals How Daughter's "My Dad Sleeps" Comment Ended His Bank Interest Retirement

Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola once planned a life of leisure after parking his wealth in banks that offered a staggering 35 percent interest.

The comfortable returns seemed enough to sustain him without lifting a finger. He admitted in a recent interview that he had no intention of working again.

That changed the day his daughter returned from school. When asked what her father did for a living, she replied simply: "My daddy sleeps."

The comment stung. Otedola realized his lifestyle had painted him as idle in his child's eyes. "I made money and put it in Nigeria banks... That’s when I started business again," he recounted.

The anecdote, shared widely on social media, has sparked reactions across platforms. Many Nigerians praised the motivational twist, while others noted the privilege behind earning such high passive income during that era.

Otedola, born in 1962, built his fortune through oil trading with Zenon Petroleum. He expanded into power with Geregu and other sectors, amassing a net worth estimated around $1.3 billion.

Yet his path has not been without controversy. In 2012, his company faced scrutiny in the fuel subsidy probe. Otedola was linked to bribery allegations involving lawmakers Farouk Lawan and Boniface Emenalo. He claimed he reported the demands, leading to a sting operation, but the episode raised questions about dealings in the subsidy regime.

More recently, accusations of benefiting from fuel subsidies resurfaced in 2025, which he denied and countered with a defamation suit. Critics point to his dominant position in diesel imports as grounds for suspicion, painting a picture of an elite navigating Nigeria's opaque oil economy.

Otedola has also spoken about major losses, including a reported $1.2 billion hit, showing resilience after setbacks. He started his diesel business door-to-door after a frustrating hotel experience during a blackout.

In the viral clip, he joked with daughter Temi about his occupation: "I sleep for a living." The lighthearted exchange belies the deeper drive family provided.

Social media users have mixed takes. Some celebrate the family motivation, while others question the narrative in a country where average citizens struggle with banking rates and economic hardship.

Otedola's story underscores the power of purpose over comfort. From near-retirement to building empires in energy and finance, the billionaire credits that schoolyard remark for reigniting ambition.

At 63, he continues to feature in business and philanthropy. Yet the scandals linger, reminding observers that behind motivational tales often lie complex realities of wealth accumulation in Nigeria's challenging environment.

The daughter's innocent words served as a brutal wake-up call. For Otedola, it marked the end of sleeping through success and the start of something far bigger — and far more scrutinized.
