Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, has made a bold move by declaring his intention to contest for the presidency in 2027. In a charged address at the Labour Party headquarters in Abuja, Baba-Ahmed affirmed that his ambition is neither borrowed nor reactionary—but deeply rooted in his long-standing vision for a just, secure, and progressive Nigeria.
Breaking away from speculation that he was merely riding on Peter Obi’s political momentum, Baba-Ahmed made it clear that his presidential aspiration predates their 2023 alliance. He stated, “This ambition is mine. It is not inherited, transferred, or imposed. It comes from my desire to serve Nigeria with integrity and rebuild what has been broken.”
The timing of his announcement is significant, coming shortly after Peter Obi’s reported exit from the Labour Party to pursue other political options. While many supporters remain loyal to Obi, Baba-Ahmed's declaration signals a new chapter for the LP—one that aims to stand on its own strength and ideology.
The Labour Party leadership, led by Julius Abure, expressed full support for Baba-Ahmed’s presidential aspiration, praising his loyalty, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the party’s vision.
Addressing questions around religion and regional politics, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that Nigeria needs competent, ethical leadership—not divisive rhetoric. “Our country is bleeding. What we need is courage, vision, and unity—not politics of tribe or religion,” he declared.
As one of the first major figures to step forward in the 2027 race, Baba-Ahmed’s early positioning could reshape the opposition landscape. His entry sets the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive and defining election season in Nigeria’s democratic history.
