Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election. He secured the ticket after a contentious primary held across the country.
Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes to defeat Rotimi Amaechi, who got 504,117 votes, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen with 177,120 votes. The results were announced late on May 27 at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
In a sharp message to the ruling party, Atiku declared that President Bola Tinubu should "better pack and go back to Lagos." The statement came shortly after he accepted the party flag.
The victory marks Atiku's continued push for the presidency following his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party. Analysts view it as part of a broader opposition effort to challenge the APC's hold on power.
However, the process was not without drama. Amaechi rejected the outcome, citing voter disenfranchisement and manipulation. Hayatu-Deen also boycotted the announcement over similar rigging allegations.
Party leaders, including Senator David Mark, presented the flag to Atiku amid cheers from supporters. Atiku urged unity, warning against celebration while the nation faces pressing challenges.
The development has ignited debates on social media. Many see Atiku's bold challenge to Tinubu as a sign of renewed opposition confidence. Critics, however, question the sustainability of the ADC coalition given past fractures.
As Nigeria inches closer to 2027, Atiku's latest move adds fuel to the political fire. His message underscores the high stakes and deepening divisions in the race to lead Africa's most populous nation.
