A lively social media exchange has erupted between popular influencer Yhemo Lee and food critic-turned-perfume reviewer Opeyemi Famakin, drawing attention to the world of influencer marketing and brand critiques.
The drama ignited when Famakin posted a candid video review of Pomelle, a luxury women's fragrance from the Jan Deux line created by Yhemo Lee's wife, Thayour B. Priced at ₦160,000, the scent features sweet notes of crisp apple, caramel, cotton candy, and warm vanilla. Famakin, who bought the bottle himself, described it as pleasant and playful for women, awarding the fragrance a 7/10 (or 7.5/10) on scent alone. However, he sharply criticized the packaging, pointing out poor print quality and peeling details that felt underwhelming for the premium price. Famously, he advised the brand to "sack your printer" and ultimately rated it 5/10 overall.
Yhemo Lee quickly hit back in a fiery response, accusing Famakin of bitterness. He revealed that Thayour B's team had approached the critic for a paid promotional video during the launch, but Famakin quoted a hefty ₦6 million fee, which was declined. Sharing screenshots to support his claim, Yhemo Lee questioned the timing of the purchase and review, suggesting resentment over the rejected deal. In pointed remarks, he called Famakin a "fat fool" and defended the perfume's success, noting it had sold over 1,000 bottles and sold out twice.
Famakin fired back in follow-up videos, insisting his feedback was honest and unpaid. He highlighted past free promotion he gave Yhemo Lee's restaurant and challenged the influencer to a face-to-face meeting in Lagos, declaring, "Come and touch me. Are you mad? Call your lawyers."
The back-and-forth has sparked wider debate about transparency in paid influencer reviews, support for local brands, and the line between critique and personal attacks. As both sides dig in, the incident underscores growing tensions in Nigeria's influencer and luxury product space.
