Controversial singer Portable has addressed British-Nigerian rapper Skepta over calls for local celebrities to speak against rising insecurity in Nigeria.
The response came shortly after Skepta highlighted injustices and urged action on May 30, 2026.
In a video statement, Portable explained why many stars remain silent.
“Skepta is saying celebrities should speak, did he want Nigeria government to pick us? They will arrest us if we speak up. We only need help,” he said.
Portable stressed the risks involved for those based in the country.
He noted that speaking out could lead to oppression, passport seizure, or worse.
“Nigerians in diaspora should speak up cause Nigerian government can’t arrest them,” Portable added.
The singer made his priorities clear. “I’m only concerned about money,” he stated bluntly.
This comes amid heightened concerns over kidnappings, including recent incidents in Oyo State. Skepta had called for global attention to the plight of Nigerians.
Portable's remarks reflect broader fears among entertainers. Several artists have faced backlash for silence on national issues, while others who speak encounter criticism or threats.
His stance has drawn mixed reactions online, with some agreeing on the dangers of activism in Nigeria and others accusing him of prioritizing personal gain over public duty.
The exchange underscores ongoing tensions around celebrity responsibility, free speech, and government response to insecurity.
As debates continue, Portable's message highlights the difficult position many face living and working within the country.
