Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Burna Boy has found himself at the center of a brewing scandal after U.S.-based Nigerian artist, Doctor Spice, came forward with serious allegations. According to Spice, Burna Boy accepted a payment of $5,818 back in 2015 for a music video that was never produced and now, nearly a decade later, the singer is demanding accountability and threatening legal action.

Doctor Spice dropped the bombshell on July 13, posting what he called "receipts and truths" on social media. The posts included screenshots of money transfers, messages, and a bold callout accusing Burna Boy of ghosting him after receiving the payment. The money, according to Spice, was part of a collaboration agreement that also included promises of credit and royalties for a song he helped co-write and sing backups on. Instead, he claims, Burna vanished without honoring any part of the deal.

"I paid for a video, Burna vanished," he wrote. Spice also alleged that he reached out several times over the years and even shared evidence with Burna Boy’s team but got no reply. In his posts, he expressed frustration that fans and the industry continue to overlook what he calls theft, simply because Burna Boy is now a global star. “Everyone is acting like I’m not speaking out enough,” he said. “USA no be Naija wey dey lawless.”

The 2015 payment might seem like old news, but Doctor Spice insists that the matter remains very current to him. He said he had stayed silent for years, hoping the issue could be resolved privately. Now, with no response from Burna Boy’s camp, he’s decided to go public and pursue justice through the U.S. legal system. "It’s not just about the money," he explained. "It’s about the disrespect, the betrayal, and the principle. You don’t use someone’s creativity and vanish like that."

The claims are striking, especially considering Burna Boy’s rise to fame over the past decade. From hit songs to sold-out international tours, Burna has become one of Nigeria’s biggest musical exports. But if what Doctor Spice is saying holds water, it could stain that legacy with accusations of exploitation and fraud in his early career.

Social media reactions have been mixed. While some fans are demanding answers and encouraging Burna Boy to speak up, others are more skeptical of the timing. “Why now?” one commenter asked. “Feels like a cash grab.” But Spice insists the silence isn’t about chasing clout. He claims he waited this long out of fear of being blackballed or ignored, but has reached a point where he can’t keep quiet anymore. “The truth doesn’t expire,” he said.

As of now, Burna Boy has not publicly responded to the allegations. His management team has also remained silent, refusing to acknowledge or deny the claims. Legal experts suggest that if Doctor Spice moves forward with a lawsuit in the U.S., Burna Boy could face serious legal and reputational consequences, especially if evidence supports the accusations.

One of the more damning parts of Spice’s statement is the claim that he contributed vocals and songwriting to one of Burna Boy’s tracks without credit or royalties (On a Spaceship). In the music industry, such accusations are taken seriously, especially when contracts or recordings exist. Spice hinted that more details and possibly unreleased material will come out during the legal process.

This isn’t the first time Burna Boy’s name has come up in controversial headlines, but this may be one of the most personal and potentially damaging allegations yet. If proven true, it could open the door for other early collaborators to come forward with similar experiences.

For now, fans and critics alike are waiting to see if Burna Boy will address the issue, apologize, or choose to fight it in court. One thing is clear - this is no longer just a music industry whisper. Doctor Spice has made it a public battle, and he’s not backing down.
