It was a Black Sunday for the family of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, following the death of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a road accident involving a Dangote truck.
The tragic incident occurred on August 13, 2025, near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State, when a Dangote truck reportedly ran into Ruth. She sustained severe leg injuries that led to an emergency amputation. The accident happened barely a week after she graduated, sparking widespread sympathy across social media.
Despite intensive medical care and financial support facilitated by the Dangote Group and its insurance partners, including plans to airlift her to India for advanced treatment, Ruth passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at around 6:30 a.m. Her death was confirmed in a family statement issued through Eko Solicitors & Advocates and shared by Phyna on her Instagram page.
“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st day of August, 2025, at about 06:30hrs,” the statement read.
The Dangote Group also expressed its condolences, emphasizing that officials had stood by the family since the accident and reaffirming the company’s commitment to road safety.
As the entertainment community and fans continue to mourn, the Otabor family has requested privacy while they grieve, noting that funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Ruth’s untimely death has cast a dark cloud over the BBNaija star’s family, turning what should have been a season of celebration into one of mourning.
