Nigerian actor Yhemo Lee has voiced deep frustration over the escalating kidnapping crisis, warning that perpetrators who once operated mainly in the North have now reached Ibadan.
In a widely shared social media post, the Ibadan-based entertainer lamented the government's perceived inaction. He highlighted attacks on vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly.
“Children nko? Like babies are being beaten to stupor,” Lee wrote, expressing outrage at reports of young victims.
His comments come as Oyo State grapples with multiple incidents. Recent cases include the abduction of a woman in broad daylight at Bolumole, Challenge area in Ibadan, and the kidnapping of two staff members from the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN).
Police have launched investigations and made some arrests, but public anxiety persists. Bandit activities along routes like Ibadan-Ijebu have further heightened fears, with travellers reporting ambushes.
Lee questioned the authorities’ capacity: “Are kidnappers more powerful than the government?” He noted that even Children’s Day celebrations feel unsafe for innocent kids in parts of the country.
Reactions on X reflect widespread worry. Many users echo concerns about the southward drift of insecurity, with some linking it to broader failures in governance and policing across the Southwest.
The actor’s outburst underscores growing public discontent. While officials dismiss some viral claims as exaggerated, verified abductions continue to fuel panic in communities once considered relatively safer.
As fears mount that Lagos could follow, citizens demand stronger action. Lee’s post ends on a sombre note, urging advocacy while expressing fear for the nation’s future.
