As of early January 2026 petrol prices have started to come down globally and in various regions due to a combination of oversupply,

economic shifts, and local currency performance.

Here is a breakdown of why you are seeing lower prices at the pump

1. Global Oil Oversupply

The most significant factor is that the world is currently producing more oil than it needs.

Production Surge: Countries like the United States, Brazil, and Guyana have ramped up production significantly.

Inventory Builds Global oil inventories are growing at a rate of over 2 million barrels per day

OPEC+ Limits: While OPEC+ has tried to keep prices high by cutting production, their influence has weakened as non-OPEC countries continue to flood the market.

2. Slowing Global Demand

The appetite for fuel has softened due to two main reasons:

*Economic Cooling: Major economies, particularly China, have seen slower-than-expected industrial growth, reducing their need for energy imports.

Energy Efficiency: The rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and more fuel-efficient internal combustion engines is finally starting to "dent" global gasoline consumption.

Lower Crude Oil Prices

Because of the oversupply, the price of Brent Crude (the global benchmark) plummeted throughout 2025, ending the year near $60 per barres a 20% drop from the previous year. Forecasts suggest it could even dip into the $50s by the spring of 2026.

Local Currency Gains (Specific to Nigeria & South Africa)

In many regions, local factors are amplifying the drop in global prices:

Nigeria: The Naira recorded its first annual gain in 13 years at the end of 2025. A stronger Naira makes it cheaper for the country to import refined petrol, which helps lower the price at the pump.

South Africa: A stronger Rand throughout December 2025 contributed to significant price "over-recoveries," leading to expected cuts of about 60 cents per litre for petrol in January 2026.
