Yoruba actress Kemi Afolabi has spoken publicly about her harrowing experience with lupus, calling it a spiritual turning point that deepened her reliance on God. In an interview on Doyin Kukoyi TV on August 9, 2025, she shared that the illness brought her dangerously close to death.
“The sickness drew me closer to God. I get emotional talking about it, but it’s behind me now—God saved me,” she said.
Afolabi recounted how, during the worst phase of the disease, she was bedridden, dependent on oxygen, and convinced she would not survive. She had even purchased her own grave and completed her will. “God told me it wasn’t my time. It was only an illness, not the end of my life,” she explained.
Her recovery, she said, was made possible by divine mercy and the steadfast support of her family and colleagues. She acknowledged that while many with similar illnesses have died, her story drew heightened attention because of her public profile.
The actress also revealed that doctors initially misdiagnosed her condition several times before finally confirming she had lupus—an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue.
