Lagos Red Line (Agbado to Oyingbo), the service has been experiencing significant interruptions recently.

As of early January 2026, the train system has faced a few hurdles:

1. Mechanical Failures (Red Line)

The Red Line, which uses Talgo Series 8 trainsets, has faced recurring mechanical challenges. Reports indicate that these trains—originally built for a project in the United States over a decade ago—have struggled with the local environment and technical compatibility.

The "System Overhaul" LAMATA recently announced a temporary suspension to perform a "comprehensive system overhaul." This is intended to fix persistent engine issues that caused several trains to break down mid-journey in December

2. End of the "Holiday Discount" Surge

Up until January 4, 2026 the Federal Government provided a 50% discount on train fares for the yuletide season. This caused a massive surge in passengers. Now that fares have returned to normal, some schedules are being readjusted to match regular commuter volume, leading to perceived "delays" or fewer trips compared to the festive peak.

3. Power and Infrastructure Maintenance (Blue Line)

While the Blue Line is generally more stable because it is electric, it occasionally "refuses to work" due to:

Planned Maintenance: LAMATA often shuts down the line on specific weekends to switch over power systems or install new tracks for the Phase 2 expansion toward Okokomaiko.

Vandalism Prevention: There have been brief halts in service to repair perimeter fencing or security sensors designed to keep people off the electrified tracks.
