Ogun State Government Nullifies Ongoing Awujale Selection, Directs Fresh Process

ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE – The Ogun State Government has officially nullified the ongoing selection process for the vacant stool of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

The stool became vacant following the passing of the revered Oba Sikiru Adetona, who joined his ancestors in July 2025 at the age of 91, after a historic 65-year reign

Reason for Nullification: Procedural Lapses

The decision was announced following a high-level meeting presided over by the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat. The government cited "procedural errors" in how the initial process was triggered by the local government.

“The government’s intervention is a corrective measure to ensure strict compliance with the 2021 Obas and Chiefs Law and the 1957 Chieftaincy Declaration,” a top government official stated. “The aim is to prevent the installation from becoming a fertile ground for protracted litigation.”

Key Developments in the Reset

  • Withdrawal of Previous Mandate: The initial letter issued on December 2, 2025, which gave the Fusengbuwa Ruling House 14 days to submit names, has been withdrawn.
  • Restarting the Clock: The Fusengbuwa Ruling House, whose turn it is to produce the next monarch, has been directed to wait for a fresh authorization letter from the local government before recommencing the screening of candidates.
  • High Interest: Before the suspension, over 60 princes had reportedly indicated interest in the exalted throne.

Rising Tensions and Legal Challenges

The voiding of the process comes amid a "succession storm" involving various stakeholders:

  • The Fidipote Family Factor: The Fidipote Ruling House recently petitioned the government, claiming the Fusengbuwa family had forfeited its right by failing to meet the original 14-day deadline.
  • KWAM 1 Legal Suit: Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) has approached the Ogun State High Court seeking to restrain the selection process, a move the Fusengbuwa family has dismissed as irrelevant to their internal procedures.
  • The "Female Line" Debate: Legal experts have noted that under the current law, eligible candidates can be drawn from both male and female lines of the ruling house, further widening the pool of aspirants.

What Happens Next?

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House, led by Vice Chairman Prof. Fassy Yusuf, has expressed cooperation with the state government, noting that they have not yet submitted any list to the kingmakers. A new date for the family nomination meeting is expected to be announced once the fresh legal directives are issued.
