A 24-year-old Benin-based TikTok star known as "Madam Oil Rice" has landed in hot water after confessing to faking her own kidnapping – all for likes and follows.
Osarobo Omoyemen went viral recently with a dramatic video claiming she was snatched by unknown gunmen along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City.
She tearfully narrated how "police rescuers" later detained her at Akpata Police Station and demanded ₦10,000 bail before releasing her, painting a picture of corruption and trauma that quickly spread online.
But the Edo State Police Command smelled something fishy and launched an immediate investigation.
What they uncovered was pure fiction. Under interrogation, Omoyemen admitted the entire ordeal was staged from start to finish, solely to create buzz and grow her TikTok audience.
The command's spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, revealed she had accomplices helping pull off the hoax, and efforts are ongoing to track them down.
Omoyemen was swiftly charged to court on Thursday, November 20, 2025, facing prosecution for spreading false information that could incite public unrest.
This isn't just another clout-chasing gone wrong – in a state plagued by real kidnappings, such stunts risk distracting security forces and eroding trust.
As Yamu warned, fabricating stories undermines genuine efforts to keep Edo safe. For Madam Oil Rice, the quest for viral fame has backfired spectacularly.
