The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to the Federal High Court in Abuja over an explosive bribery allegation rocking the National Assembly. According to SERAP, some lawmakers allegedly pay between ₦1 million and ₦3 million just to get their motions or bills presented, a claim that has sent shockwaves through political and gossip circles alike.

The case, filed under suit number FHC/L/CS/2214/2025, was made public on November 2, 2025. SERAP’s lawyers, Kolawole Oluwadare, Kehinde Oyewumi, and Andrew Nwankwo, are asking the court to compel Akpabio and Abbas to hand the matter to anti-graft agencies like the EFCC and ICPC for proper investigation. They’re also demanding protection for Hon. Ibrahim Auyo, the lawmaker who first exposed the alleged bribe-for-bills racket in a viral video that set social media buzzing.

SERAP insists this kind of scandal undermines the trust Nigerians place in their lawmakers. In its statement, the group described the alleged payment system as “a grave violation of public trust and constitutional duty.” It added that public office shouldn’t be for sale, especially not when it comes to lawmaking meant to serve the people.

The revelation has since turned into a hot topic online, with Nigerians calling it yet another proof that the corridors of power are not as clean as they appear. While many await official reactions from Akpabio and Abbas, neither has publicly commented on the lawsuit or the bribery allegations. For now, the silence only fuels curiosity and gossip about what’s really going on behind the red chambers’ doors.

As the court prepares to hear the case, Nigerians are watching closely to see if this will finally be the moment someone draws a line against corruption in high places or if, like so many scandals before it, it will quietly fade away once the buzz dies down. Either way, the ₦3m bribe-for-bills saga has already left a stain that won’t be easy to wash off.
