Nigerian singer Portable has sparked fresh debate in the music industry by accusing top Afrobeats stars Wizkid, Olamide, Davido, and Burna Boy of dominating the scene for over a decade and hindering emerging artists.
In a viral video shared early Saturday, Portable claimed these veterans have held the spotlight for too long, effectively "blocking people's destinies." He also alleged they exaggerate purchases, such as claiming billion-dollar chains that might actually be gifts or far less expensive.
Olamide, one of those named, responded subtly by reposting the video with a laughing emoji on social media. Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy have remained silent so far.
The outburst has divided fans. Some praise Portable as a bold voice exposing gatekeeping in Afrobeats, where established acts often mentor or sign new talent through their labels. Others dismiss it as jealousy, pointing to the success of rising stars like Rema (under Davido's DMW) and Ayra Starr (via Olamide's YBNL).
Despite the criticism, Afrobeats continues to thrive globally, with new artists gaining traction even as veterans maintain strong influence. Portable's comments highlight ongoing tensions between established icons and ambitious newcomers in Nigeria's competitive music landscape.
