It started with one innocent post, but in Nigeria, nothing stays innocent when Davido and Wizkid are involved.
On December 3, Jubril A. Gawat, the powerful voice behind Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s social media, shared a sleek flyer for Wizkid’s upcoming concert at Tafawa Balewa Square. His caption? “Ọmọ Wa ni 🔥🔥🔥” – a proud Yoruba declaration that translates to “He’s our own.”
For most Lagosians, it was just sweet hometown love. For Davido’s eagle-eyed fans, it was the latest episode in a long-running subtle shade.
Replies flooded in fast. Some teased that Davido would “threaten” Gawat, others crowned Wizkid the undisputed king of Lagos. Gawat played along, laughing off the threats and doubling down with short, confident replies like “Yup” when someone called Wizkid the face of the city.
Twenty-four hours later, the 001 himself arrived.
Davido dropped two now-viral responses: “Bro it’s been a year let it go… why e still dey do you? Grow up” and “Since yesterday… let it go nah… cheer up.” The tone was calm, almost big-brother-like, but the message was crystal clear – stop the indirect jabs.
The internet exploded.
30BG dragged up old receipts claiming Gawat has quietly favoured Wizkid for years, while FC reminded everyone that Wizkid actually grew up in Surulere and still carries Lagos in his veins. Some even whispered that a government official choosing sides in a celebrity beef smells like soft political campaigning.
By December 7, the original post had crossed 270,000 views and Davido’s clap-back racked up over three million. Blogs picked it up, hashtags trended, and memes of “Ọmọ Wa” versus “Omo Baba Olowo” flooded timelines.
Gawat has stayed silent since the call-out. Wizkid, as usual, hasn’t said a word – his legendary quiet treatment in full effect.
One thing is certain: in the never-ending story of Davido versus Wizkid, even the Lagos State Government just got dragged into the group chat. And Nigeria can’t stop talking about it.
